Light as work instrument

When seeing well is not only a daily-life requirement, but also a fundamental part of one’s work, light takes on a new meaning and is among instruments needed to enable correct and safe production processes.

RIMSA has been designed lighting solutions for more than 85 years, during which has increased its experience and deepened its expertise with a state-of-the-art technological approach. RIMSA has always designed, projected and produced table lamps, ceiling LED lights and work light. RIMSA products can be used in every work sector. Consult the catalogue and discover the best for your needs!

Choosing our LED industrial lamps, you will optimize lighting in your spaces, improving productivity and reducing energy costs. To understand the added value of LED work lights by RIMSA and which of them is the best for your needs, it is useful to have a deeper understanding of what makes the difference between a LED lamp and a halogen lamp and between a work light – intended to facilitate and improve production performance – and a designer lamp – intended to add an aesthetic touch to the environment in which it is placed.

Work light: which one to choose?

Saying which is the best work light is not obvious. It is necessary to consider several aspects:  the size of the spaces to be illuminated, the climate of the workplace, the use of light, the hours of exposure to light, which work instruments to illuminate, the temperature of the light, …

It is therefore clear that choosing a specific work light is a process of evaluation that goes through a basic but important question:

What is light?

“Light is an electromagnetic wave that spreads through rays that can be reduced to straight lines; it is a form of energy that allows us to see shapes, colors and all the characteristics of our surroundings.”

Work light: what it means

In the workplace light has to respect specific parameters, at the basis of which there are two primary concepts to remember:

    1. A work light has to reproduce natural light and the original color of the objects, as if they were illuminated by the sun.
    2. Human body is projected to live in nature, so to reduce the stress caused by artificiality of the environment it is necessary to reproduce lighting that is as natural as possible. This is because natural light shows both psychological and physiological advantages.

Lighting standards in the workplace

According to Legislative Decree 81/08 in Annex IV, Requirements for workplaces, Workplaces, in point 1.10. Natural and artificial lighting of workplaces “premises and workplaces must be equipped with devices that allow adequate artificial lighting to safeguard the safety, health and well-being of workers”. The UNI EN 12464-1 standard sets out the lighting requirements for workplaces to ensure visual performance and visual comfort. The standard provides reference values and operational guidelines for a wide variety of environments and production sectors, detailed for individual activities or tasks. In addition, operational guidelines and methods are defined for a correct assessment of the working environment.

How to know which type of lamp to use?

To understand which kind of lamp to use, firstly it is important to define what is the area of application is and what performance it must guarantee the user. Here is a summary of the reference characteristics in order to understand the most suitable light for individual requirements depending on the workplace and type of work.

1. Color temperature

Light is divided into warm (between 2400 and 3300°K) and cold (from 5000 K). The ideal light temperature for work is neutral between 3300 K and 4000 K.

2. Beam width

It is measured by the beam angle, which indicates whether the light is more diffuse in the room or more concentrated on a certain point.

  • Directional lamp: if the angle is less than 120°, then we will have a directional bulb, which will point towards a small surface area. This aspect is fundamental when using light for precision and research works where a common table lamp is not sufficient.
  • Ambient lamp: if the angle is between 150° and 360°, the light beam will be wider. It is used to illuminate a room evenly. This is referred to as a diffuse light lamp.

3. Dimmer

The presence of a device that adjusts the intensity makes the lamp dimmable, which is useful in all those situations where the light has to vary according to the activity taking place.

4. Lumen and LUX

The lumen is the value which indicates the intensity of light in an area. The LUX is the light intensity at a point.

5. Ignition time

Fluorescent lamps have an incandescence time of between 10 and 100 ms. Today’s technology finds the best solution in LED light: it only takes a click and it starts immediately.

6. Energy label

There are 7 energy efficacy classes. When it comes to technical lighting for workplaces, the best LED light sources for professional use on the market today cannot fall below class C.

How to choose the perfect work light for your needs?

To create the perfect lamp for each sector, RIMSA has studied the properties of lighting system over a long period of time, considering all the characteristics and rules about light and specific work areas. The combination of these aspects classifies the different work lamps.

How should light be at work?

Lighting space: RIMSA knows how important it is to illuminate every inch f space to avoid production errors, accidents and to guarantee a safe environment for workers. That is the reason why it has dedicated its research and development department to finding effective solutions.

How to illuminate the workplace?

When the lighting space is limited to a workbench, the work light will have to comply with both the need for illuminated space and the mode of use. It is therefore calculated:

In the offices it should be between 300 and 500 Lux. In the production companies and industrial plants, a brightness of 500-750 Lux is required for the proper use of electrical instruments and industrial machines. In professional offices and for quality control, documentation control and technical drawing the luminous intensity of professional LED lamps must be 750 Lux. Finally, for precision and manufacturing work, such as goldsmiths or tailoring, the light intensity of industrial LED lamps must be between 2000 and 3000 Lux.

In industrial and professional LED lamps, the pantograph arm is a must: agile and resistant, it guarantees great maneuverability, as well as resistance and reliability. RIMSA has not only made this movement smooth, but has added a few pluses to LED lights. For example, for precision works, Cyclops model work lamp with magnifying glass offers two-in-one solutions. RIMSA work lights are also ultra-versatile: in the catalogue table lamps with clamps or with the classic painted metal base for maximum stability.

The continuity of light is another important aspect to consider. LEDs of RIMSA industrial lights are made to last for more than 50.000 hours. This is due to the ceramic base and the technical support and protection features that enable the industrial lights to withstand even high temperatures and pressures, as well as strong vibrations, stress and moisture. Despite their long service life, the LEDs selected by RIMSA do not need any maintenance or frequent repairs.

Industrial and professional LED lights by RIMSA do not contain chemical substances like halogen lamps, so they are safer for the health of workers who perform activities in vicinity of the lamps. In addition, they produce an intense light, which illuminates every corner of the space reducing the risk of injury, the likelihood of errors and the occurrence of eye disorders. LEDs also do not produce heat, so they protect from environment overheating and in extreme case also from fires starting.

What are the advantages of a work light that was created for this specific use?

The advantages that a work light created specifically as work instrument – such as RIMSA’s industrial and professional LED lamps – offers the worker and the professional are multiple.

From a company point of view, the use of work light:

  • meets legal rules
  • guarantees a longer service life that amortizes the investments
  • reduces costs because allows the company and the professional to save energy
  • improves the productivity
  • guarantees more safety

From a worker/professional point of view, the use of a specific table lamp for their work:

  • reduces visual stress
  • increases concentration
  • reduces fatigue
  • improves visibility

What people think about us...

I am in possession of a model 88 lens lamp from the 1970s inherited from my father-in-law who used it in his radio technician's workshop. I still use it today, at home, for my hobbies it works perfectly and I can appreciate its reliability and durability. Its simplicity of design makes it still an appreciable piece of furniture in any home or professional laboratory.

Giuseppe Grilli

It is not just a lamp, but a beautiful piece of furniture. Thank you again.
